Matt 2:1
'After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who has been born King of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him"' (NIV)
Matt 28:16,17
'Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw Jesus, they worshipped him, but some doubted.' (NIV)
I believe that we humans are made to worship, so if we decide not to believe in God then we find something or someone else to direct our love, our veneration, our awe and devotion. It could be a celebrity, a football team, or simply the advance of science (which could include our smart phone!), or a partner or loved one.
But here, the Magi were in no doubt that Jesus was worthy of worship, though those disciples in the second scripture were not so sure. Exactly who was Jesus? As Jews they would believe that worship was reserved for God alone.
This Christmas we need to decide who we believe Jesus to be: a good life coach, a prophet, some ordinary guy, or God himself who came down, and in the words of the famous Christmas carol, was:
born that man no more may die
born to raise the sons of earth
born to give them second birth.
So that's us.
Let's worship him.
