"...you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
Psalm 69:1
'Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck, I sink in deep mire..'
This name, given to the little baby, 'Jesus', which means 'saviour', was all about his main assignment in life: to save people from their sins. Everybody loves a saviour, be they Superman, Dr Who or Harry Potter, but not everyone realises that they, themselves, need to be saved.
Realising our need of help is the first step to recovery for many an alcoholic or person with an addiction.
And much as we try to do good in this life, we're all pretty addicted to selfishness, so let us, with King David in the Psalm above, cry out to God for help, whatever our situation.
As Paul the Apostle quotes in his letter to the Roman believers (Rom 10:13),
"Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."
(Joel 2:32)
