Luke 2:12 (NKJV)
'"And this will be a sign to you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger."'
Isaiah 7:14 (NKJV)
"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel."
It's interesting, isn't it, that these two 'signs' should describe the same event but from totally different angles?
Jesus was born in a little town in Israel to a perfectly ordinary set of Jewish parents...... or was he? He was, in a way, the first genetically engineered baby, born with only one human parent, though he was fully human, he wouldn't have had any of his DNA passed down through Joseph.
Each of us is made up of three parts: spirit, soul and body. Now this is me just ruminating here....so Jesus' body was 100% human and his spirit was 100% God, so what about his soul, - his thoughts, will and emotions? Just as this part of us is inextricably linked to our physical body and the chemical workings of our brain, so, I believe, it is just as tightly interwoven with the workings of our spirit. So Jesus' soul was completely human, but also completely divine.
He was the complete outworking of his title, 'Immanuel', which means 'God with us'.
Here's a wonderful clip from the Hercules film (Disney version!) which reminds me of how Jesus tasted death to rescue each one of us, but unlike this clip, he really did die....and came back to life again! And he wasn't half man, half god, like Hercules in the Greek myth, but fully man and fully God!
